Medical Saints Patronal Festival

The feast of Saints Medici is directly related to the origins of Alberobello since taken to start the special veneration by Gangirolamo II Acquaviva d'Aragona, Count of Conversano and lord of the jungle.
Date back to 1635 the first signs of that cult, at a time when the count had built a house in Forest accommodation for himself and his followers and, later, a small chapel in which was placed a painting in canvas (unknown author ) in which she portrayed the Virgin Mary with the Holy Martyrs Cosmas and Damian. Perhaps a special miracle pushed the austere lord, nine years before, to give to his eldest son the name Cosmo. However, the cult was believed to be wanted by his wife Countess Isabella Filomarino. Surely she was voted to the two saints as the Count, who was in search of glory in daring adventures. - It seems strange that a man as a reckless stroke Giangirolamo II is dedicated to the veneration of saints.
Antonio Mauro Jewelry, historian, tells us that in Isernia St. Cosme was known as a saint of infertility and impotence, we learn that Isabella Filomarino Giangirolamo and Count II, in anonymity, after a certain period from the wedding, they went on pilgrimage to Isernia devotion to St. Cosmas. After that Isabella gave birth to several children and the eldest son called him Cosmo. No historian tells us what kind of miracle with esatezza received the count and never has been found no trace of reference, whatever, for those who have studied in depth the character of the count seems strange that a guy like that is dedicated to the veneration of saints without having had a tangible enough to shake a mind as hard as that of "Guercio. Under those facts we conclude that the pair-Giangirolamo Isabella, before having children, have had difficulty in procreation enough to intercede "grace" in San Cosma in Isernia and that "receipt" have named their firstborn Cosmos.
Since then the House of Acquaviva in Conversano has lavished so much for the Saints Medici on 27 September 1636 the Earl Silva organized in a procession, with torches in fecevano wing Spear and the few locals, also invites noble ladies and gentlemen of the feud.
In subsequent years, always in that day, whether they were present the Acquaviva or their directors, their house was teeming with devout people of the surrounding places. The cult was managed by the family until 1665, when the Earl died badly.
Since then the inhabitants of the Lacandon formed to commemorate the two saints in procession carrying a picture, other than the venerated by the Count, from their rural church between the houses and fields. From 1725 as more devotion to the Saints it was decided to expand the church also encouraged the veneration of the faithful.
The day of Ss Medici in 1781 was troubled, so there Martellotta tells it in his "Memoirs istoriche and present in the worship of Ss Doctors use the 350th anniversary of devotion alberobellesi" from one of the notorious bandit raid in the village of Castellana Scannacornacchia and his cruel gang. On that occasion he also feared for the large canvas of the SS physicians, it qullo was the last year that was carried in procession.
For fear that the ancient painting, symbol of the house might be injured, the year after a certain Giuseppe Domenico Rinaldi he carved at his expense, two wooden statues depicting Cosmas and Damian. The artist, however, managed to achieve only that of St. Cosme, he died suddenly. The second statue was then commissioned an artist of Rutigliano, that Luke, nicknamed Tammurriate, who handed it two years later.
In May 1782, a year of great drought, the statue of St. Cosme, sculpt made in Andria, was unable to come to church just reached the town, the sky seemed to open up and rain as much as to lead the people of Selva to believe in a God's blessing, the first gift of St. Cosmas in the new People of devotees.
It was certainly not the only miracle. When, in the years 1690-'92 the plague struck in Puglia, in this respect is reminiscent of miles of dead who suffered their neighbors (Castellana, Conversano, Noci, Putignano, etc.) La Selva remained out of the contagion. On this occasion Ss Doctors also venerated in Conversano, where the "eyed" had dedicated the little church in their honor, formerly of St. Matthew, adjacent to a Benedictine Monastery (which by then were better known by the name of the nuns of St. Cosmo ) work miracles so great that citizenship throughout the entire Chapter of the Cathedral and pledged to vote to participate each year at the feast and religious ceremonies in their honor.
